Kelvin Grove’s Village Church and Communify are holding a Trivia night to save The Exchange, the suburb’s much-loved and busy community hub. The Exchange is a community development project of Communify Qld.
Funding for The Exchange will run out at the end of the year, casting grave shadows over a space that provides education, social support and wellbeing for more than 700 community members each month. With a view to developing a long-term strategy, project workers at Communify engaged a part-time community development worker to assess and address the needs of a diverse and multicultural community. This rigorous research paid off, and since then, The Exchange has flourished, rapidly becoming a vital and integral place of learning, support and social connection.
Communify manager Karen Dare has been monitoring the progress of the Exchange since its inception, and has seen positive changes in the community that exceeded expectations. “We began with a primary focus on opportunities for people to participate in activities that promoted their health and wellbeing and to encourage community engagement to support people to overcome social isolation,” she said.
The Exchange offers services for people from all walks of life – from classes for people wishing to brush up on their budgeting or computer knowledge, to support for people wishing to learn new parenting skills. For others, it is a much-needed space to meet and maintain friendships – a wonderful source of social support for some community members. “Communify, from the very beginning, stated that if we were to begin this work we would be here for the long term. “This is not a project that we can simply walk away from.” Karen said.
Organisers of the Trivia night hope that the Exchange trivia night will help raise awareness and much -needed funds that will help keep the Exchange afloat in the face of a worrying future.
Sponsors have provided a generous swag of prizes, including a signed Rugby World Cup jersey and meal vouchers.
